Groupies, by Baron Wolman

In 1969 photographer Baron Wolman took some pictures of groupies for a 'Rolling Stone' article: Karen Seltenrich, Miss Harlow, Lacy, Jenni Dean, Sally Mann, The GTOs, The Sanchez Twins and Catherine James.

Pics taken on January 1968 at Belvedere St. (San Francisco); June 1968 in San Francisco; November 1968 at A&M Studio (Los Angeles) and Belvedere St.; November 1969 at Belvedere St.; and March 1970 in San Francisco.

Catherine James was a Wilhelmina model and a photodouble, as well as an artist, and a Warhol's Factory girl. She raised alone her son with Denny Laine Damien and met musicians like Bob Dylan, Jackson rowne or Jimmy Page. She has spent most of her life in California and currently lives in Los Angeles.

Jenni Dean. When he first approached the groupies about the special issue Baron said, "One of the women said, 'Oh I'm not a groupie.' But you are a beautiful woman who hangs around usicians; call yourself what you want, but that's why we're featuring you.· And she agreed to e included."

Karen Seltenrich (or Karen Seltenreich) got into The Beatles in 1963 and quickly exploded to include just about every band working in her native San Francisco from the Great Society on. Along the way she has learned the rock business, first as a waitress and presently as booker of hards for the Matrix, a San Francisco rock club. She has red hair and a Marilyn Monroe pout. She says how she was with this British rock vocalist of no small renown and now is full of praise for Englishmen. Karen herself went onto marry a Kuwaiti sheik who she had three children with.

Lacy. "She was gorgeous," says Baron, "I couldn't stop staring and shooting."

Miss Harlow. The "Miss" title preceding the girls names was invented by [musician] Tiny Tim, who christened every woman with a "Miss" title. Harlow became the second plater for Cynthia Plaster Caster's business. Harlow says it's not a full time usiness. She split from her home in San Diego when she was 17 in 1965. She has lived in San Francisco and Hollywood and Seattle. Harlow said she would love to be an actress though she's never appeared on stage. She doesn't mind being called a groupie. "I go where the music is", she said.

Sally Mann was one of the better known and more respected groupies of the San Francisco Scene. After marrying Jefferson Airplane's Spencer Dryden she went to prison for a heroin bust but was a model prisoner earning a college scholarship, and eventually becoming a successful lawyer in Texas.

Twins Laura and Lynn Sanchez, the Sanchez Twins, were another two members of Baron's groupie 'elite' who would spend a lot of time making themselves attractive to famous musicians. Baron says, "I loved the 'Groupie' issue of the Rolling Stone, mostly because I love women and am always looking for an excuse to photograph them. I worked very hard on the 'Groupie' issue. I shot it like I did the Grateful Dead cover story -- seamless, single light, two lights actually, very simple photographs of all these girls.

The GTOs (Girls Together Outrageously) were a "groupie group" that consisted of Miss Pamela (Pamela Ann Miller, later Pamela Des Barres), Miss Sparky (Linda Sue Parker), Miss Lucy (Lucy Offerall, later Lucy McLaren), Miss Christine (Christine Frka), Miss Sandra (Sandra Lynn Rowe, later Sandra Leano), Miss Mercy (Mercy Fontenot, aka Judith Edra Peters) and Miss Cynderella (Cynthia Wells, later Cynthia Cale-Binion). The group hailed from the area around Los Angeles in the late 1960s, with most of the girls being denizens of the Sunset Strip scene. Their only album, Permanent Damage, was released in 1969.
